John Kotter’s (1995) classic article on leading change provided an eight-step framework for delivering change effectively.
- Establish a sense of urgency
- Creating a powerful guiding team
- Having a vision
- Communicating the vision by a factor of ten
- Removing obstacles to the new vision
- Systematically planning and delivering short-term wins
- Don’t let it up, and don’t declare victory too soon
- Anchoring changes to the organisation’s culture
These eight steps do not have to be executed in sequential order, but each serves as a checkbox so leaders can avoid critical errors.
