Nelson Phillips Five Guidelines for Giving Feedback

  • Focus on specific behaviours and the effects of the behaviours
  • Avoid generalisations such as “you always” and “you never.”
  • Keep feedback goal-oriented. It’s not about the person; it’s about what we want to achieve
  • Be careful of timing - don’t give feedback when the other person is upset or when you are upset
  • Focus on things that are controllable
