Nelson Phillips Five Guidelines for Giving Feedback

  1. Focus on specific behaviours and the effects of the behaviours.
  2. Avoid generalisations such as “you always” and “you never”.
  3. Keep feedback goal-oriented. It’s not about the person; it’s about what we want to achieve
  4. Be careful of timing - don’t give feedback when the other person is upset or when you are upset
  5. Focus on things that are controllable
