Staff Meetings

(From Andy Grove’s High Output Management)

A staff meeting is where a supervisor and all their direct reports gather to exchange information, discuss problems and make decisions together.

An agenda should be issued well in advance to give participants time to prepare their materials. There should also be a free-flowing section where everyone can raise topics freely - but remember to only encourage lengthy discussions that affect more than two people. Heated discussions that only involve two participants should be taken offline.

The supervisor’s role is to keep discussions on track, to listen, ask questions and learn. The supervisor should maintain a low profile whilst peers engage in active discussions.

Staff meetings are an effective medium for peer managers to build relationships and work together effectively.
